The pressure plates, with the help of springs, serves as a lid which “pushes in” and “pulls out” to compress and decompress the clutch pack (a series of friction plates within the basket).

When the rider pulls the lever in, the compressed springs on the pressure plate retracts which causes the friction plates to separate and begin to rotate independently as it disconnects the engine from the transmission system.

As the rider releases the lever, the compressed springs on the pressure plate increase friction between the friction discs and plates. This applies the transfer of torque to the transmission and then travels through the gears to the rear wheel and tire.
